Monday 13th October - walk **** – Holbrook circuit – cloudy.

The UK is stuck in a huge high pressure making for foggy morning and loads of cloud with light winds so when Mag went on her early morning walk I decided to stay in bed! I had a plan, breakfast, exercises, pack a picnic and drive over to Old Hall Farm near Bentley where saw the amazing blusbells earlier in the year hoping to see sme Autumn colour even though w emight be a little early? We left Felixstowe at 11.30 and after crossing the Orwell Bridge I realised I had taken the Shotley road by mistake instead of the Branthan road!!! I had to turn right towards Holbrook when Mag suggested we park at St. Peters Church and walk down to the Stour, what a great idea that was:) The footpath runs right through Griff Rhys Jones front garden of his swanky house with views down to the River Stour, we found his herd of black alpacas grazing before we made it to the river path which carries on right past the impressive Royal Hospital School, the tide was low and you get lovely views with some big dark skys! We find a top bench at the end of Holbrook Creek where we stop for our yummy picnic lunch directly across from where I windsurf at Wrabness! We spot a man walking out on the mud who walks back along the edge of the creek and after lunch we scramble down the sea wall and head out across the stoney/weedy foreshore to the bank with a line of wooden posts, why take the easy path when you can take the slippery route, it was great fun! We make it back to the proper path and continue to the end of the creel with the boats high and dry in the mud! The footpath back to Holbrook Mill follows the stream through lovely woods and fields full of sheep with some nice autumn colours, just brilliant! A small detour to see the mill and we then have to walk along the road past the swanky row of school houses and back down The Drift to our van for the drive back to Ipsich where we stop at the impressive Bourne Garden Centre where Mag buys loads of top plants, we have a voucher and home for a welcome cuppa, top day walking a path we have never been on before – top day!
